Preliminary Simulation of HADES Load Transfer

Space Constraints

Load will be transferred through an eye nut connected to the piston and inside of the cup. This presents a space problem, as the threading on the end of the piston rod has to accommodate the diaphragm, the eye nut, and some sort of retention mechanism (like a cotter pin). Some preliminary options (which can be combined) are:

 

Decrease thickness of diaphragm

As a preliminary guess, the diaphragm total thickness can be decreased from 0.625 to 0.45. I wouldn't want to decrease the thickness any more than that because I want the pins connecting the diaphragm and the cup to not be right up against the edge (even if the aren't intended as a load path)

Increase threading length on rod

This may be difficult depending on the treatment of the steel rod.

Choose a different eye nut

The current one (featured in the CAD above) has a rating of 1,800 lbs. We still need to qualify main shock force, but a smaller eye nut will probably be ok, assuming it has a safety factor built into the cots product.
