Q: How do I configure my iPhone for MIT E-mail?
There are different ways to set up email accounts on the iPhone. During the activation process, the iTunes software may pick up your MIT email setting on your laptop/desktop computer, and the correct settings for MIT E-mail may be transferred over to the iPhone. Otherwise, the settings need to be entered manually.
The instructions below describe methods to set up MIT E-Mail manually:
- Go to Home Screen on the device.
- Open Settings and open Mail.
- Open Add Account and select Other.
- Choose IMAP.
- Enter the following information under IMAP:
- Name: Your full name
- Address: Your MIT e-mail address
- Description: The default value is the email address. The description can be changed to any (e.g. MIT Email)
- Incoming Mail Server
- Host Name: enter username.mail.mit.edu (username = your MIT user name)
- User Name: Your MIT/Kerberos username (without "@mit.edu")
- Password: Your MIT email password
- Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
- Host Name: enter outgoing.mit.edu:587
- User Name: Your MIT/Kerberos username (without "@mit.edu")
- Password: Your MIT email password
- Tap the Save button at the the top of the screen.
- You will receive a "Secure Connection Failed" pop-up, press Continue.
- Mail screen should now be opened with the MIT email account shown in the list.
- Select the MIT Email account and scroll to the bottom of the screen. Tap Advanced.
- Confirm/Edit the settings as necessary:

- Drafts Mailbox: Drafts
- Sent Mailbox: Sent Messages
- Deleted Mailbox: Deleted
- Deleted Messages:
- Remove: Never
- Incoming Settings:
- Use SSL: ON
- Authentication: Password
- IMAP Path Prefix: INBOX (CAPS)
- Server Port: 993
- Outgoing Settings:
- Use SSL: ON
- Authentication: Password
- Server Port: 587
- Mailbox Behaviors:
- Try sending an email to yourself in order to test incoming and outgoing email.
