The LNA is usually one of the first components in the RF signal chain. It is important for the LNA to have both low noise and high gain. Low noise is needed to increase the sensitivity of the interferometer and reduce error in the geodetic delay or phase observable. High gain is needed to minimize the noise contribution of follow on circuitry. The low system noise temperates needed in the VGOS system requires that the LNA operate at cryogenic temperatures.
