Purpose
The purpose of the mission package tube is to provide structure for the rocket and enclose other components with a smooth aerodynamic surface.
Materials
Tools
- Radial indexer
- Center Drill
- 23/64 Drill Bit
- 27/64 Drill Bit
- 39/64 Drill Bit
- 100 degree Countersink
Requirements
Mission package tube ID must interface correctly with FRR
Must be the correct length for the rocket to have a stable margin
Must allow access to cameras and avionics controls
Must withstand axial load from the piston recovery system
Manufacturing
Set up radial indexer. Tram with dial indicator to 2 thousands of an inch accuracy in x and y, tram to 10 thousandths of an inch radially.
Started with a stock of length 23 15/16" (this is just the size of the one from wildman, but anything that is 19.5" or longer works)
- Left 2" for clamping space on one side
- Center drill --> through hole --> counter sink
- Drill holes at 1200 RPM & counter sink at 200 RPM
- Move to the next set of holes based on drawing.
- Flip the tube after the first half set of holes to finish the rest.
- Cut the tube to size, leaving 0.01" extra which would be sanded down to exact size
Testing
The mission package tube will be tested by fit checking it with other components to ensure correct alignment and fit, and may be sanded or have holes adjusted if necessary.
