I personally think that the structure of rush is completely unproductive and altogether wrong.  Having a dry rush immediately after the freshmen arrive on campus creates a competitive, phony atmosphere where frats must woo freshmen with tens of thousands of dollars of steak and lobster dinners, go kart trips, and paintball excursions.  Everyone (myself included) puts on a fake front in order to portray themselves as the frat to join.

Why can't we have an IAP rush?  Freshmen and fraternities would have the whole first semester to get to know each other.  Potential rushees would have a semester to adjust to life in Boston and at MIT and determine what kind of commitment they would be willing to give to fraternities.  Then everyone that wanted to rush could come back from IAP one week early and rush would only need to be about 3 days long.  Fraternities would already have a good idea of which freshmen they want and freshmen would already know which frats they like.  It could then be a 3 day no BS process of just in-house events and dinners where we would spend $500 instead of $10k.

Oh yeah, and if you choose to respond to this post please do not talk about any frats in particular...just the overall rush process.
