Peggy's notes:

We talked about

  1. Using CME alums and Cambridge students who are at MIT to be available for
    • continuing orientation
    • ad hjoc groups
    • course questions
    • tips on "how to get around department" and "college"
  2. Possible undergraduate research projects, connections with
    faculty here and there
  3. It looks as though most students do have laptops
  4. Ben sez: uncap our bandwidth, and I don't know if that's a real problem
  5. Sam: CU terminologies and department/supervisor prefs for problem solving
  6. Moira: Chem Eng get no help on how to do lab reports; who to
contact with questions, form of the reports
  7. Jenna: clear that John Archer is no help at all. All biologists
had no clue going into the exam period how to prepare for extreme
essay-based tests. Jenna suggests we replace Archer with Alan Weeds
(who's a friend of Paul Matsudaira). More support needed from NS
    departments
  8. Students suggest a point of contact within department: 1 student
    for each module/course
  9. Sam talked about the new alumni site being scoped out: mailing
    lists by department and college.
  10. Special emergency card: who to contact in the event of trouble;
  11. How can we put groups in touch with each other without a lot of overhead.
  12. Reunions here and in Cambridge for alums (we have fund-raising needs)
  13. AIM lists
  14. Keeping in touch with parents
  15. Instead of current system, have an "adult friend of CME"
identified in each college (I think this idea's time has come)
  16. At Emmanuel, no tutor for Moira; Patrick Barrie was great, but
at Emma "no one knew what was going on with me." or understood the
    exchange, etc.
  17. Jenna: antagonism from Trinity
  18. Can we re-instate Buddy System at Cambridge? Returnees who are
the "overseas contact" for CME students. Students in CME don't know,
e.g., where to store stuff, how to get around, etc., until much too
    late in year.
  19. Jenna suggests lists of all CME students, like this
    Jenna was at XXX college
    Her DOS was XXX
    Her tutor was XXXX
    She took these modules
  20. Moira suggests regularly scheduled online forums plus Rob
Wallach is "in" 1x a week for an hour.
