Goal

Investigate real time communications tools that students can use to keep in touch with others participating in the CME exchange, alumni from prior years, friends back at MIT, MIT faculty and administrators, and family.

Current Status

A Wiki (https://mv-ezproxy-com.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/cme/) has been set up to allow students to share information. There has been a request for mailing list service with a searchable archive.

Issues

Students have had issues with network connectivity at Cambridge. There is little wireless coverage on campus. Public workstations do not allow storing web certificates.

Action Plan

  1. Investigate cellular data service (EV-DO) availability on the Cambridge Campus to compensate for the lack of wireless coverage.
  2. Identify a small group (4-6) of students (maybe those who are active Wiki contributors?) to do a small pilot and provide with:
    • Laptop (if they don't already have one)
    • USB camera
    • USB headset/handset
    • eyeBeam client
    • MITnet SIP accounts
  3. Equip 1-2 alum and others back at MIT with the above.
  4. Trial for approximately 2 months.
  5. Report on the experience/use of the above and evaluate the value of a wider experiment in the spring.
