XML Schema Changes Engendered by the OCW Metadata Revaluation.
These changes will for the most part take place with the extension schema OCW has appended to the IEEE LOM XML schemas (http://ocw.mit.edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/xsd/ocwLOM/ocwlomv1.0/ocwlomv1.0.xsd)
Rights Type Vocabulary
The Credit, Rights, and License elements all use the lom:lom/rights/description/string xml element. This causes OCW metadata xml documents to contain multiple instances of this element with different types of values. There is no mechanism within the IEEE LOM XML Schema to characterize the content of the element. We should add an attribute to the OCW LOM extension schema that applies to the lom:lom/rights/description xml element. This attribute would type the rights statement, using this controlled vocabulary of types: "Credit" "Copyright" "License".
Contributor Role Vocabulary Changes
We have changed the vocabulary of contribution roles to reflect our better understanding of the character of contributions to OCW Resources including the publication of OCW material. We have also added new values to the vocabulary to reflect the different contributions made to previously uncataloged resources (audio and video). This new vocabulary will apply to resources cataloged in the future. It is unlikely that values for resources cataloged in the past will be changed. This puts us in the uncomfortable position of maintaining two xml enumeration lists that are both used to restrict values for the role element (perhaps an union element?)
The Old list:
- Author
- Contributor
- Content Provider
The New list:
- Course Instructor
- Creator
- Publisher
- Composer
- Performer
Learning Resource Type Vocabulary Changes
We are also changing the Learning Resource Type Vocabulary, abandoning the IEEE LOM defined list of elements for the list of material types maintained by the OER Commons. The IEEE LOM vocabulary is outdated and ill-applies to OCW resources. The OER Commons Material Types vocabulary better characterizes the content of OCW resources. Again we need to maintain to xml vocabularies, one for already cataloged materials and one for the newly cataloged.
