Future of Top U.S. Particle Physics Lab in Jeopardy: Scientific American

The above article details the latest round of budget cuts that Congress has imposed on the scientific community.

For those unfamiliar, Fermilab is a federal particle physics lab, much like CERN in Switzerland, and home of the Tevatron particle accelerator. Beside the fact that Fermilab is located in my hometown, I think it's disgraceful and irresponsible to cut back on important research like this.

Why do you think Congress is cutting funding for scientific research like this? Does/should the war really take priority? Do our representatives not understand the benefits to be gained from such research? What is the rationale?
