Nina's Report

Project: Indiana Digital Library's In Harmony Project

They use the following standards:

  • AES-X098B
  • MusicXML
  • Variations 2 (custom metadata schema)

Standard: MPEG-21

Standard for delivering multimedia applications.

Digital Rights Management (DRM) a key feature.

Intended for delivery of content via the web.

Not likely a standard we will use.

Not an urgent priority.

Forrest's Report

Standard: AES-EBU

Not an audio metadata standard.  A standard for broadcasting audio through cable.  Likely this standard should have been AES-X098B.

Forrest sent the group a pdf of a chapter of a book about audio preservation.  He will post this pdf to the wiki.

Next month Forrest is going to the oral history conference.

Rob's Report

Standard: ID3

ID3 is a defacto audio metadata standard for embedding metadata within audio files.

Developed initially for use with .mp3s, an open and compressed, widely used standard for publishing audio via the internet.

ID3 has been adopted by iTunes and most other music sites.  Of course, iTunes has developed its own custom flavor that has become the most widlingua franca.

Many other file formats have adopted the ID3 standard, including video file formats, mostly because they want to distribute their content via iTunes and similar services.

There are many open source ID3 editors.  It would be wise of us to make use of this standard if we prepare compressed versions of our audio and video for distribution via the web.

Standard: ATOM

ATOM is a structural metadata scheme use for serial delivery of content via the web (blogs and podcasts).  As podcasts began to include audio and video files, several a/v specific metadata elements were created for the standard. The key elements are forthcoming from Rob.

Google and YouTube video services have created extensions of the ATOM schema.  They both rely on ATOM for submission of content.  This makes it of very great interest to us, if we choose to use those services.

Standard: AudioMD

The Library of Congress developed extensions schema for METS in order to capture format specific techncial metadata for their Audio/Video Prototype pproject.  AudioMD is a basic schema that should be looked into.

Notes

  • Nina suggested adding OCW audio/video metadata to the big table of metadata standards being created on the DOME Core main page.
  • OCW's audio video projects should be added to our list of research topics
  • All of us will look into audio research data standards and projects
  • It may be worthwhile to also research audio file formats
  • In research metadata standards and projects we should focus on producing a list of relevant elements from the standard/project.
