MIT Relations
Theater Arts Faculty
The President must maintain a strong link between the Ensemble and the Theater Arts Faculty. To foster this link, the President must attend the monthly Theater Arts meeting. To be aware of Ensemble issues, the President must attend all Ensemble and Ensemble officer meetings. The President must disseminate information from the Ensemble to the faculty and vice versa as needed. The President must be prepared to work with the faculty when concerns about the Ensemble arise.
Constitution
The President shall be responsible for ensuring that all constitutional amendments are lodged with the MIT Association of Student Activities.
External Relations
The President must field questions and concerns from outside groups such as the Office of the Arts, other theater groups, other departments, and students interested in the program. The President is not required to deal with issues involving tour planning or publicity for shows. The President may ask the Chair to call meetings. If the Chair is not able to attend a meeting, the President will run the meeting. The President is a link between any Consulting or visiting director and the Ensemble. If the director has difficulties working with any Ensemble member, or with the rehearsal process, the director can bring these issues to the President's attention. The Ensemble officers, the consulting director, and visiting director should then work together to resolve the issue.

What do we want to do with this?
Questions (ensemble-alum-ask)
I have a proposition for you. Myself and some other alums were recently contacted by current members for advice re tech aspects of the show, which we were only too happy to provide. I thought it would be nice for ensemble members to still be able to ask for advice from alums like that, even when many of us are crufty memories from the distant past. So: I talked to some other ex-Ensemblites about being on an "ask an alum" mailing list, full of alums who don't mind occasionally being spammed questions by current members about how to do costumes or how to put up monument or "so I heard the Ensemble did this thing this one time, does anyone know any details?" sort of stuff. We have ensemble-alum@mit.edu, but its not the sort of thing one should spam in that way. Lots of the alums I talked to are v enthusiastic about it and happy to answer questions. If you're interested, you just need to set up an mit mailing list, I can tell you who's already shown interest and you could send it out to ensemble-alum for more peeps.
Who to ask
ensemble will occasionally be invited to Theater Arts meetings. You should go or find someone to take your place. At the beginning of the meeting, you will be asked to give an update about the ensemble. No need to be formal, just a summary of what has happened lately. The faculty will then ask if you want any help or advice before giving you a brief TA update. You will be asked to leave the meeting before they start discussing their own internal affairs.
Theater Groups
Be aware of what other theater groups on campus are doing. Do publicity exchanges with them. Plan events to see their shows. Maintain good relations with all of them. We borrow a lot of things from MTG, so try not to make them angry.
Constitution
According to the constitution, the President should run meetings if the Chair is absent. In addition, the President is responsible for interpreting the constitution. It is exceptionally rare that situations arise in which this responsibility is relevant. At such times, you may wish to consult with other Senior members of the ensemble. Ultimately, use your best judgement.
External Affairs
Director
Make sure the director and any other professionals from outside MIT are treated with respect and treat the ensemble with respect. Though the producer will usually handle this, it is ultimately the responsibility of the President.
Publicity
Though you are not directly or indirectly responsible for any publicity, it is good to be aware of any ensemble publicity that is occurring outside MIT.
ensemble-alum
Alumni on this list should not be contacted frequently. One email per semester with a general update and invitation to alumni reception should be sent, preferably two or three weeks before the term show.
ensemble-alum-ask
This is a resource for contacting alumni who graduated recently and who are happy to share specific technical advice. You should constantly remind people that this list exists! They tend to forget, but it is extremely useful.Grace - Scenic Painting
