When viewing the map, tagging options allow the user to organize friends into groups and toggle which friends are visible on a map. The user also has the ability to control who they are visible to with the application’s hiding options. Interaction between friends is facilitated via the built-in instant messaging client.
OBSERVATIONS
1ST PROTOTYPE
1. Friend Finder Search Bar:
When the user is asked to "Add 'Mason' to your friend list," the user completely misses the Friend Finder Search Bar. Instead, the user tries to find an "Add Friend" button in the tabs.
When the user cannot find the button, the user searches the map next-- still not thinking to use the Friend Finder Search Bar. It is unclear to the user what the search bar does.
Modifications applied to prototype:
- Modifications can be see in the images under "2nd Prototype." They are outlined in purple.
- The modifications inspired by this group of observations are the ones labeled "1", "2", and "3"
Modification 1: The label "Friend Finder" is added above the search bar to imply its functionality to the user.
Modification 2: An "Add Friend" button is included to the bottom of the "All Friends" tab. When it is pressed, the Friend Finder Search Bar flashes, indicating to the user that the Friend Finder Search Bar should be used.
Modification 3: The Friend Finder Search Bar is outlined in bright red to attract user attention when they are scanning the interface.
2. "Hiding From" drag and drop design not intuitive:
When the user is asked to "Make Yourself Invisible to Monica," the user confuses the "Hiding From" section on the interface for a text box, and tries to type "Monica" into it. When this does not work, the user tries to find the command by either clicking on "Monica" in the tag menu, or clicking on "Monica" on the map. When neither of these choices lead to a "Hide From" option, the user does not know how to proceed.
