Conservation assistance required

Use in situations where conservation assistance is necessary to provide access to collections materials, e.g. moldy collections that need to be viewed in the fume hood. Do not use this access restriction type for materials that have been treated by conservation and are stable for use, or for materials with conservation issues that do not require mediation, e.g. brittle paper. Conservation issues that should be noted but do not require mediation can be added to the Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements note

Donor imposed access restriction

Use in situations where the donor has specified restrictions on an entire collection or portions of a collection in their deed of gift, e.g. if a collection is closed until their death. 

Federal or state access restrictions

Use in situations where collection materials are restricted due to federal or state laws such as FERPA, HIPAA, and MA 201 CMR §17, e.g. student information. This restriction type can also be used to indicate attorney-client or attorney work product restrictions on legal records. 

Institute records access restriction

Use in situations where there is a restriction imposed for a specific type of Institute records according to MIT policy, e.g. 50-year restriction on records of the Corporation.
